July 14th - Lapeer, MI Cell Tower Nest

This is the Lapeer, MI cell tower osprey nest that was recently discovered and reported to the Michigan DNR. It is a first year nest. The osprey in the foreground is a "hacked" bird; a male that was raised and released as part of the Michigan DNR Osprey Reintroduction Program, which began in 1998.

This new nest appears to contain 9-inches or more of nest material.

We watched the female osprey from this nest for several hours; no bands could be seen on either leg.

She is sitting on one of the upper antennas, looking for intruders and occasionally watching the nest to her left. We did not see a chick in the nest, but at least one has been reported.

The male osprey camped on this antenna shroud for most of the morning, and into the early afternoon. You can clearly see the USFWL band on his right leg, and the green hacking band on his left. The closing flange of the hacking band is directly at the camera.

At no time did he turn toward us so that we could see the numbers after the "C" prefix.

Our uncooperative male did make one short flight and returned to the antenna shroud. That provided an opportunity to get a good photo of his feet, which clearly shows the "C" letter on the green hacking band.

We need help in identifying the two digit number that follows the "C" prefix. If you are able to read it, please let us know. Having the complete alpha-numeric code will allow us and the Michigan DNR to know the year this male osprey was released, and from what location.
