June 22rd - Photos of Kensington's Osprey Chicks

Windfall Hill mother with 3 chicks
At first arrival to the Windfall Hill Bay nest, no chicks were in sight. They were all down sleeping or keeping a low profile. One-by-one those little heads started popping up to see what was going on.

How delightful it was to once again see 3 chicks in this nest -  for the fifth straight year. Marvelous!

Father osprey arrives
During a distraction, the male arrived at the nest. It was hoped he had a fish for the chicks and their mother, but at first, nothing could be seen.

As is turned out, the male indeed had a rather large piece of fish with him. It looked to be well over a pound. There was enough to supply all that the chicks could eat and plenty for the female.

She is holding the fish in her right talon and pulling off morsels for her brood.

Wildwing Lake female with her 2 chicks
After leaving the Windfall Hill Bay nest, the Wildwing Lake nest was the next stop.

Same story, no chicks could be seen at first. Then, one-by-one, two chicks popped up to catch a few sunny rays and look around.

This is the 7th successful nest for C09 and mate. Their first offspring was a single chick (Bucko) in 2002.

Mother osprey spent most of her time standing over the chicks to keep them cool since they cannot regulate their own temperature at the age of two weeks.

Photographer Donna Roy sent along some photos for the OWSEM web site. Thanks Donna!

This is C09 and mate at their Wildwing Lake nest with one of their 3+ old chicks stretching out a wing in front of mother osprey (left adult). The chicks have almost doubled in size from the above photos.

Here is another of Donna's photos; this one of the Windfall Hill Bay nest chicks with their mother. Look at the size of those chicks now!  It is simply amazing how fast they grow.
