As
detailed in a prior "Breaking News" section, here are some photos of
the new Commerce Twp. nest located near the end of Old Farm Lane, in
yet another cell tower.
This nest was discovered and reported to
OWSEM by Janet Weisbrod in early May. The female of this pair was
incubating when we were there as her mate watched from his cell antenna
perch.

Much
to our surprise was the fact that the female at this nest was banded on
her right leg (highlighted area) with a US Fish and Wildlife band. We
did not see this band with the spotting scope while watching.
That
band was probably put there by a DNR person when this bird was banded
as a chick from one of the local Southeast Michigan nests from a prior
year. That makes her a possible 2nd generation osprey.

While
viewing the nest with the spotting scope, we could clearly see that the
male was banded with a US fish and Wildlife band as he perched on
several parts of the cell tower where his lower legs were visible.
This
photo clearly shows that band on his right leg as he prepares to land
again. He was also probably banded by the DNR in a previous year as a
chick in a local nest, making him a possible 2nd generation osprey, too.

Male
ospreys never seem to be satisfied that the nest they have build is
done! While we were observing, several new sticks were added to this
nest.
This photo shows one of them being added to the North side
of the nest bowl. For a brand new nest, this one is very well
constructed!
