March 2011
The
first "Friends of the Osprey" award for 2011 goes out the Mason, MI Boy
Scout Troop 763 for their efforts to build
and install two
Osprey Nesting Platforms in the Maple River State Game area.
This
photo is of platform number 2. Arron Rustem spearheaded this
project as part of his requirements for becoming an Eagle Scout. He and
his troop members raised enough money to assemble three complete
nesting platforms. Their plan is to donate the uninstalled
third
platform to the Michigan DNRE. We applaud their wonderful effort!
A complete photo story of this project is in the 2011 Photo
Album. (OWSEM was a major financial supporter of this
project.)

July
2006
Our
first "Friends of the Osprey" award for 2006 goes to these special
people from Skyline Services. They are from left to right, Dave
Clevinger, Steve Cirelli, Jerry Hawkins, and Brad Leach. For the second
year in a row, they took a day out of their busy schedule to rig and
climb the Acme and Lake Nepessing towers, safely remove the chicks from
the nest, ferry them to the ground and then back up after banding, and
finally, safely return the chicks to their nest. This is hot, hard,
very specialized, and potentially hazardous work, and this group of
individuals did a marvelous job!
Without
their help and dedication in assisting the DNR and Detroit Zoo staffs
with these tasks, banding of the chicks in these two, 190 foot high
cell tower nests could not have been accomplished! Their wonderful
support of the osprey reintroduction efforts in southeast michigan is
truly appreciated and recognized by OWSEM. We look forward to working
with them again next nesting season.
Thanks again Dave,
Jerry, Steve, and Brad; you guys rock!

September
2005
This
month's award, our first for 2005, goes to Laura and Bill Jordan, along
with the great staff at their Medina Raptor Center near Cleveland, OH.
A female osprey taken to Laura's facility after being shot at Portage
Lakes, OH was successfully rehabilitated and released after many months
of effort. These folks were successful in getting this osprey's wing
repaired and healed, getting her to eat, managing her through flight
retraining, and repairing her broken tail feathers. A full page of
pictures with the complete story on this amazing effort is here!

This
month's award goes to the kind folks of McFarlin Tower Co. They are
from left to right John and Lucinda McFarlin, and David and John Owen.
Working for SPRINT and LCC Inc., they completed antenna installation
work on the 180-foot high cell tower next to Acme Building Materials
Inc., with minimal disturbance to the nesting ospreys. They scheduled
many installation activities to accomodate the needs of the three,
two-week old chicks. Each day, Dave even delivered supplemetal fish to
the nest for the female to feed herself and her brood. Toward the end
of the project, the female would remain on or near the nest
while
workers were on the tower. The crew's willingness to protect the
well-being of this osprey family while doing their work is most
appreciated by OWSEM.

| June 2004
This
award goes to our friends at Acme Building Materials Inc. in Brighton.
They have watched the ospreys on the cell tower behind their business
all of last year, and have been of great help in providing information
on last year's and this year's nesting activities. Most
recently,
they assisted OWSEM with telephone alerts and information regarding
cell tower upgrades, that caused the female to leave the nest for long
periods of time, potentially harming the eggs. This situation has been
resolved for the near term, but serious issues still remain regarding
the well-being of the ospreys versus ongoing cell tower maintenance.
Our grateful thanks to the folks at Acme for their help.
